I don't leave home with out my radio shack police/fire radio scanner. With it, I can pick up all the radio communications between police officers and firemen. On the subway in Manhattan I can hear the train conductor talking to the police dispatch. The radio also picks local airports and planes flying over head, including some military craft. Also news desks talking to there traffic helicopers. Radios can be had for less then $100 dollars. But make sure it has text imput so you can lable what you are listening to for future reference.
